TO MANSFIELD RESIDENTS

Some months ago the Mansfield Police Department contracted the services of “A Child is Missing”

A Child is Missing is a service that will “free of charge” make computer generated phone calls to residents and businesses in the area of any child, mentally handicapped or Alzheimer’s person who is not accounted for.

It works in the following manner:
The caretaker of the person will report the person missing to the police department which will immediately begin an investigation/search. As soon as possible the police department will forward the descriptive information of the person to A Child is Missing which will in turn make the telephone calls.

On May 9, 2006 we had our first activation of this service when two elderly persons were unaccounted for. A short time after calls were made, the persons were very happily found and in good health.

The purpose of this letter is to inform you of this service which initially may sound like a telemarketing call which it is not. In the event that you do receive such a call, we ask you two things: First of all, obviously, to keep a look out for the person/s described and secondly, we ask you to please not call the Police Department or Public Safety Dispatch with comments or questions about the call. By all means, please call if you have any information that may assist us in locating the person/s.

I believe that you understand at such a time your public safety personnel are busy locating persons and the dispatchers could very well become overwhelmed by well intentioned calls and in the not too distant future we will purchase with grant funds our own Reverse 911 system which will have the capacity to make a follow-up call once the person/s are located thus ending the search. Currently we do not have that capacity.

I thank you very much for your assistance.

Arthur M. O’Neill
Chief of Police
