Hazardous Material Disposal

Board of Health

[Mercury products] [Pressure treated wood] [Latex Paint] [Household collection]

Disposal of mercury products and fluorescent bulbs

As of May 1, 2008, mercury-added products cannot be disposed of in trash when they reach the end of their useful life.  The disposal prohibition covers all products to which mercury has been intentionally added (these are classified as “mercury-added products”), but excludes “formulated” products (which are chemicals such as cleaners, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals).

Further information on mercury and the Mercury Management Act can be found at:

http://mass.gov/dep/toxics/stypes/hgres.htm#intro

Fluorescent bulbs

Starting June 1st, residents will be able to dispose of all types of fluorescent bulbs year round at no charge.  Collection sites for compact fluorescent, four and eight foot, U-tube, circular and high intensity discharge (HID) lamps will be at the following locations:

 Mansfield True Value Hardware
284 North Main Street
 508-339-5115

Mansfield Green Recycling Park
Intersection of Pratt Street (Route 106) and East Street
508-261-7335

Please contact those collection sites for operating hours.

Mercury Thermometers

Once again the Board of Health is able to offer digital thermometers in exchange for mercury thermometers.  We will accept as many mercury thermometers as you would like to bring,  but are able  to only exchange up to 2 digital thermometers per household.  Please bring mercury thermometers to the Health Department for exchange or disposal.

Mercury Thermostats

Mercury thermostats may be brought to the Health Department for disposal.

Bulk Mercury

If you have a large quantity of bulk mercury, please do not move it or bring it to the Health Department.  Contact us at 508-261-7366 and we will have the mercury safely removed.

If you have further questions about mercury, disposal or other issues relating to public or environmental health, please call the Health Department at 508-261-7366.

Disposal of Pressure treated wood and other waste

Pressure treated wood is not a product that can be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

Pressure treated wood and a variety of wastes (brick, concrete, pallets, fencing, wood waste, bulky items, roofing materials and general cleanouts) not taken by trash pickup or Mansfield Green can, for a fee, be taken to:

Trojan Recycling Transfer Station
71 Forest Street
Brockton, MA
508-588-2332

Questions regarding the waste and fees should be directed to Trojan Recycling, other questions may be directed to the Health Department at 508-261-7366.

Latex paint disposal

Latex paint and stain disposal has evolved to a point where it is easy and inexpensive for the home owner to undertake.  Simply mix latex paint hardener into the paint can, let solidify overnight and dispose of it in your weekly trash.

Given the ease of home disposal of latex paint, it will no longer be accepted at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection.

In lieu of collection, the Board of Health has purchased about 2000 paint hardener packets for distribution to home owners.  Two packets per household are available at the Health Department, 6 Park Row.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection[

Each spring  the Heath Department sponsors a household hazardous waste collection. Check this web site for details
